2008 July > AGG

On June 15th, Toronto hosted the 'Aesthetic Group Gymnastics 2008 World Championships'. Teams from Russia, Estonia, Finland, Austria, Spain, and Canada competed in the sport, which combines elements of rhythmic gymnastics and dance performance by a team of 6 to 10 gymnasts. Each performance requires a high degree of athleticism, choreography, and teamwork to impress a panel of judges who assign scores based on various technical categories. The Championship finals were held at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre, watched attentively by raucous supporters of all teams. The Bulgarian National Team were the favourites coming into the final; however a spirited performance by Finland's Deltat group catapulted them to first place by the end of competition, leaving Estonia's Janika Elite in second, and Russia's Madonna group sharing the third place spot with the Bulgarian National Team.
