2008 July > Spence Gallery
Spence Gallery celebrated its 3rd anniversary this June 20th with the PaperWorks exhibit, a group show featuring 4 contemporary gallery artists working in the medium of paper. The gallery was packed during the opening reception, with the entertainment being provided by the Brazilian sounds of Bossa Massa just outside the gallery steps. Two of the featured artists were in attendance - Bushra Junaid, whose charcoal drawings of black men showcase the subjects through various stages of life, and Ilyana Martinez, whose watercolour and ink drawings reflect the environment in which she lives, a fusion of organic and constructed worlds. Other artists exhibited at the gallery included Izzeldinn Kojour, his abstract acrylic paintings depicting life in the Sudan, and Marcelo Suaznabar, whose almost caricature-like pencil sketches introduce symbolic elements left for the viewer to decipher. 588 Markham St. 416-795-2787. Always a pleasure at Spence Gallery!
